Applying for a job as a Flight Attendant with United Airlines will start with an online job application. Prior to filling out the application it would be wise to do some research online regarding United’s expectations and company philosophy.

United Airlines are looking for individuals with excellent customer service skills. Their flight attendants are the face of their company, and they choose their customer service employees very carefully.

Indicate that you are a customer service oriented person.When you are filling out your online application, you will want to keep in mind some of the skills that the position requires. If you keep a checklist of these requirements, this will help you in the interview process.

  •  Let the interviewer know that you are friendly, that you take pride in your work and that you work well with others.
  •  Airlines are looking for flight attendants who are adept at handling stress. In your interview be prepared to share a time you reacted well under stress.
  •  Flight attendants should be able to make quick and helpful decisions. During your interview give an example of a time when you were able to solve a problem quickly and efficiently.

If you are called for an interview, you will probably need to be prepared to travel to the interview location. There are many points to bear in mind, but be prepared to be on time, dress neatly and conservatively, relax and smile.


The interview process with United has an introductory period where a group of potential flight attendant candidates assembles for a video presentation of an overview of the company. The HR Department will probably present information about their hiring process and company benefits. After this group presentation, candidates will wait in a room for one on one interviews.

It is possible that during the interview candidates will be brought back for a second interview and also have language tests if you are applying for a bi-lingual flight attendant position.

During the interview process, it is important to be prepared in the following ways.

  •  Study the history of United Airlines. Understand the changes in the airline industry over the past ten years. Show that you would be able to clear up any confusion if you were asked questions about the airline by a customer.
  •  You will need to demonstrate that you can be calm and clear headed during an emergency situation. Flight attendants are expected to put the safety needs of their passengers first and foremost Be prepared to give an example of how you have remained in control during an emergency.
  •  Good public speaking skills are a must for a flight attendant. You may be asked to read safety directions aloud. Speaking loudly and clearly so that you capture the attention of your audience will be a required skill.
  •  Above all you will want to demonstrate your friendly and caring personality. United Airlines will be looking for flight attendants who best reflect the customer service philosophy of their airline. Think of all the airline advertisements that you have seen with a smiling, neat, confident flight attendant in the picture.
  •  Although common sense should tell you to dress the part for a flight attendant interview, here are a few reminders. Most airlines do not allow piercings and tattoos. Plan to dress conservatively, neutral colors and no loud and noisy jewelry. Make up should be minimal. It may be wise to stay away from perfume, interviewers or future passengers may be allergic.

After you have submitted your online application, be aware that there is a variety of different ways your interview process could take place. United Airlines may do group interviews, one on one interviews or panel interviews. Also be prepared for other tests that may be required, such as, personality tests, skills test, drug screenings and background checks.

Some candidates for a flight attendant position with United Airlines might receive a telephone interview call. This is something you should be prepared for. You may want to make a list of possible questions and answers for a phone interview. Not all candidates will be contacted in this way.

Finally, whatever way your application and interview process plays out, you will probably be contacted by email within a couple of weeks to let you know if you have been hired. Above all, remember that being prepared in advance for an interview is the number one key to being hired.
