Flight Attendant Salary

There are generally 4 components that make a career as a Flight Attendant attractive:

  • guaranteed growing base salary
  • overtime
  • per diem
  • health benefits
  • 401(k)
  • Training

Each airline pays a slightly different base salary.  But generally how it works is, you have an hourly rate (between $15.00 and $40.00 per flight hour), and you are guaranteed a certain amount of paid flight hours per month (65-80), regardless of if you work them or not.  Your hours may range, along with your hourly rate.  Coming fresh into your Flight Attendant career you’ll start off at between $16,000 and $23,000 per year.  Each year you will get a pay increase.  Eventually, in about 20 years you will see a base salary of $75,000 per year.  As with any career, you can demand an increase in pay based on special qualifications.

So that’s your base pay (minimum salary).    There are also opportunities to pick-up and trade flying schedules to earn extra-income, or earn overtime.  If you’re motivated to earn some extra dough, the physical amount of time in a day is your only limit.

Here’s what really helps maximize the amount you’re able to earn and save when employed as a Flight Attendant.  You get paid per diem for each hour spent away from home.  This is basically an allowance for you to live away from home without you having to tap into your personal cash reserves.  The per diem covers your meals, sleeping arrangements, or any other bare essential expenses.  A lot of people are able to really save their earnings and overtime when they can substantially live off of their per diem.

Extra benefits, such as Health Care and 401(k), are often included in your compensation package.  When looking at the big picture, having your employer support these benefits will save you a ton of money in the long run.  Each benefits package is slightly different.  When comparing which airline to gain employment with, definitely compare their benefits package.

Lastly, airlines are typically very good about keeping their employees up to speed with their training regimen.  You will be sure to have your employer investing in your continued education to enhance your abilities to provide health, safety, and excellent customer-service.  Be sure to inquire about this during initial interviews.
